Sharp Edges is a personal art piece that follows Shara Zaia, a Colorado-based rock climber, as she navigates identity, belonging, and mental health within the Assyrian diaspora.

Raised in Ohio as a first-generation Assyrian-American, Shara grew up torn between preserving her cultural heritage and the pressure to abandon it. In an effort to fit in and feel safe, she made decisions that distanced her from her truest self. As she grew older, Shara began reclaiming her identity, becoming an outspoken advocate for representation and community. But deepening her roots came with a new challenge: proving and defending her Assyrian identity in a world that erases it.

Caught in a liminal space between two cultures, Sharp Edges reflects on the emotional parallels between climbing and identity—both requiring resilience, vulnerability, and trust. Using a poetic voiceover and a bold visual style, the film immerses viewers in Shara’s internal world.

Through abstract movement, light, and shadows, the audience delves into the spaces between moments, emphasizing the internal landscape of her experiences. The film captures the emotional and physical benefits that climbing offers through its process, shifting away from an outcome-based or send-focused storyline.

Featuring Assyrian musicians and artists, Sharp Edges is not just a climbing film—it’s a bold act of cultural resilience, self-acceptance, and vulnerability.

Why this story matters:
The Assyrians are indigenous to Mesopotamia, with roots stretching back over 6,775 years to the ancient cities of Ashur and Nineveh. They made groundbreaking advancements in mathematics, astronomy, and medicine, leaving an enduring mark on human history.

Despite their contributions, the Assyrians have faced relentless persecution. During World War I, the Sayfo genocide saw Kurdish and Ottoman forces kill two-thirds of their population. Today, displacement continues to push them from their ancestral homeland, forcing many into a worldwide diaspora. Their language, Suret, is endangered, and their existence itself remains at risk.

Shara Zaia is a first-generation Assyrian-American climber, educator, and community organizer based in Denver, Colorado. After nearly a decade of working in early childhood education, she turned her advocacy toward the outdoor industry. She is co-founder of Cruxing in Color, a 501(c)(3) that supports climbers of color in Colorado's Front Range through free educational clinics, gear, scholarships, and events.

Shara’s parents immigrated from Iraq and raised her siblings and her in the midwest. The Zaia family descends from the Tyari and Qudshanis tribes—Assyrian mountain warriors known for their resilience. Through Sharp Edges, she hopes to inspire others from the Middle East and beyond to embrace their identity, beauty, and power.
Shara has been featured in Climbing Magazine, Boulder City & Lifestyle, The Daily Magazine, Gym Climber, and Outdoor Prolink. Read her latest written pieces in The Climbing Zine Issue 24 and Alpinist Magazine Issue 88 or listen to her podcast episodes on Dirtbag State of Mind and Dirtbag Diaries.
